Argo- Review

If you are after an evening with that offers, suspense, intrigue and courage look no further than the new release on DVD “ARGO”

I was really excited about the release of “ARGO” as a history nut films like this really capture my attention. I’m also not going to deny that having Ben Affleck starring in it didn’t add to the appeal, I have loved Ben since his Good Will Hunting  Academy Award winning days.

Anyway back to the film ARGO is based on real live events it chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis, focusing on the little-known role that the CIA and Hollywood played— information that was not declassified until many years after the event.

On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top “exfiltration” specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Besides being incredible acting in the film, Ben was also the director of this fantastic film. He also was one of the dream team of producers coming along side Grant Heslov and the very handsome talented George Clooney.

Argo was a great hit at the cinemas and I’m sure it will be on dvd.

It was also a high flyer in the film awards taking home awards for

·         BAFTA Award for Best Film

·         BAFTA Award for Best Direction

·         BAFTA Award for Best Editing

·         Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture- Drama

·         Golden Globe Award for Best Director – Motion Picture

·         Academy Award for Best Motion Picture of the Year

·         Academy Award for Best Achievement in Editing

·         Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously    Produced or Published

I really enjoyed this film it kept me interested from the beginning to the end and I honestly rate it as one of  the best films I’ve seen in a long time.

It is perfect for a cold nights entertainment.

Argo is available  from Amazon on both DVD and Blue-Ray

The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

The film has been rated R for language and some violent images.

The Dark Knight Rises – Review

If you are after a family film that will please both the adults and the teenagers look no further than Warner Bros, The Dark Knight Rises.

“Eight years after assuming the blame for D.A Harvey Dent’s death, a disgraced Batman (Christian Bale) mysteriously vanished. But everything changes with the appearance of a cunning cat burglar (Anne Hathaway) and the arrival of the Bane (Tom Hardy), a ruthless madman. Bane’s reign of terror forces Bruce out of his self-imposed exile and into the ultimate battle for Gotham City’s survival…. and his own.”

First off let me be honest and simply say I love Batman from nearly naming my first born after Nicole Kidman’s character Chase I have been a fan for over 16 years.

I love the complexity of his character and this was certainly shown in this film. The inner battle between his Bruce Wayne identity and his Batman role certainly gets the amateur psychologist in me excited.

This film is dark but only to quote my husband “if you look for the darkness”. For the teens it was just a fun super hero film.

Anne Hathaway is fantastic as the Cat burglar not really reprising the role of Cat woman but you kind off expect she could. I admit I preferred this character rather than the being bitten by cats previous one.

Christian Bale certainly plays the role of Batman well, I will go out on a personal whim and say one of the best yet, his darkness of character is pretty amazing.

Tom Hardy as Bale was a weird one for me. I admit to wanting to know more about the character and although the ending explains certain things i was left wanting.

Both Michael Caine and Gary Oldman really added to the quality of this film both playing really convincing roles. Michael Caine just gets better with age.

The special effects  of the film are just awesome and the new Batman machines are pretty great too, not to far fetched as to be unbelievable, Is that good thing???

All in all The Dark Knight Rises is a fantastic film and I’m certainly glad to have it in my collection.

New Years Eve – Review

The miserable weather of this festive season has left us with many hours to fill indoors and thanks to Warner Bros i was at least able to fill a few hours of this cold miserable wet time.

One of the dvd’s we were given to review was the romantic comedy New Years Eve.

Firstly i have to say what a star studded cast, to quote my daughter there was eye candy for everyone.

The girls were impressed that it had Zac Efron and Ashton Kutcher and I am not to ashamed to say Bon Jovi wasn’t a yummy sight.  As for talent even in a small part Robert De Niro always offers a first class performance.

So seriously a very impressive cast list.

Without giving to much away the film is based on the experiences of different individuals on New Years Eve, somehow the stories are attached and at times when you think you know who is who and what is happening you do get thrown a curb ball to keep you interested.

It is a funny, sweet film, nothing that requires a lot of brain power which i was thankful for over this stress filled holiday.

It a film that lightens your day and lets you escape for a few hours. Not one worthy of an oscar but certainly worth a watch.

For me it was great to sit and relax with my girls and just giggle away an hour or two. Who doesn’t love a feel good movie that has love and romance in it.

My only downside was the argument the film caused over allowing my daughter to spend new years eve in London, it wasn’t going to happen no matter if the mom on the film allowed her daughter to be in Times Square at new year. Teenagers they will try anything.

Seriously though its a good film and I would recommend it, but please don’t expect greatness its just a fun film with a nice storyline and worth a watch.

Review – Tom & Jerry and Scooby Doo

The last week or so my family have been busy reviewing some Warner bros DVDs. As for the most part it’s my children’s opinions that form my review I’ve decided that at times to let them describe their experience.

Hey I get them to practise their writing skills, you get to hear a review from the children who are likely to watch these films.

So here we go…

Tom & Jerry Tricks & Treats

The Tom and Jerry dvd is really good, it is very funny and interesting to watch, there are many episodes so it is always entertaining. I would say its suitable for any ages because there is no bad language or anything little kids shouldn’t be exposed too at a young age.

The main description of the film is that a cat and mouse are always fighting and the cat always loses to the mouse and it is very funny to watch them fight with each other but event though they fight they do like each other really.

Overall i think it is a good entertaining film for kids or adults to watch and is very good to watch as a family film. I would defiantly recommend this film, to lots of people.

Scooby Doo Big Top

Scooby Doo is a great film. It is funny and fabulous because it has both scary and funny parts. It is great how it connects everything together from the circus to the werewolf . The gang solves mysteries and when the owner of the circus says “This might be an actual werewolf” and nobody looks shocked the circus owner goes really “you’re not surprised I was being so dramatic” then Velma goes “oh we solve mysteries its kinder a hobby” the he goes “mysteries? Stamp collecting is a hobby.”

And also another funny part is when the owner of the circus throws garlic at the werewolf I mean that’s for vampires so silly.

So yes it is a great film and lots of funny sections I recommend it for any child over the age of six at least because there are some scary parts in it.

But altogether it is a great film.

So there you go both films were enjoyed by all the family children and adults alike.

Good family entertainment

Rock of Ages – Review

I’m not quite sure how to describe Rock of Ages, it’s one of those films I can’t decide if I either love it or hate it.

The music score holds some of my favourite ever tunes but at times the cheese factor nearly ruins them for me.

It’s a traditional story, country girl dreams of moving to the city to become a rock singer. Falls in love, gets her heart broken and learns of the seedy side of big city life.

Thankfully like all good love stories there is a happy ending but not until we have the dodgy strip club scene and in my opinion an even dodger boy band scene.

Rock of Ages is just simply fun.

The vocal talent is amazing from the two young actors and even I confess Tom cruise wasn’t bad. Though for me Tom looks better in an navy uniform than with long hair and tattoos and that surprised me as I love tattooed men, long hair not so much.

The film is about love and the love of music. It has been done before and will be done again but for a fun night it, it is well worth a watch.

Not going to be one of my all time movies but has been a big hit with my teenager daughter, but I promise if she asks me one more time if I like a song I was rocking to before she was even thought of I may have to scream.
